When Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem before a San Francisco Forty-Niners football game, he meant only to make a free speech statement regarding systemic police aggression against African-American citizens...he didn't know that he was opening a rift that would divide society, become a political flashpoint, and ultimately cost him his athletic career.
Yet even when the personal costs became apparent, Kaepernick continued -- showing as much grit as an activist as he did a quarterback.
